At Plus Chauffeurs, keeping our clients informed is part of the seamless service we provide. If you are planning journeys to or from the Portsmouth, Southampton, Winchester or wider Hampshire area during April and May 2025, please be aware of upcoming M3 traffic management and overnight closures around Junction 9.
M3 Junction 9 Closures – Key Information
Temporary CCTV and average speed cameras have now been installed ahead of the main improvement works. Narrow lanes and a reduced speed limit of 50mph are being introduced overnight, in phases.
Overnight closures (9pm to 6am) are planned between junctions 8 and 11 on the M3 and surrounding routes, including the A34 and A272 Spitfire Link. Key dates include:
-
M3 Southbound (Junctions 8-10): 22–25 April
-
A272 Spitfire Link Closure: 26–27 April
-
A34 and A33 Southbound: 1–2 May
-
M3 Northbound (Junctions 11-8): 6–8 May
-
M3 Junction 9 Northbound Slip Roads: 15–16 May
Diversion routes will be clearly signposted. However, please allow extra time for your journeys as closures and traffic conditions may vary at short notice.
About the M3 Junction 9 Improvement Project
The M3 at Junction 9 connects South Hampshire to London, the Midlands, and the North. Heavy traffic currently causes significant congestion and delays, particularly around the A34 interchange.
The improvement works aim to:
-
Create free-flowing links between the M3 and A34 in both directions.
-
Widen the junction and build two new bridges.
-
Increase the M3 from three lanes to four through the junction.
-
Upgrade slip roads and signage for improved safety.
-
Introduce non-motorised user routes for walkers, cyclists, and horse-riders connecting Kings Worthy and Winnall.
Protecting Winchester’s Rich Archaeology
Given Winchester’s historic significance, extensive archaeological investigations have been carried out. So far, studies have revealed evidence of human activity from the prehistoric period to the modern day, including remnants of ancient settlements at Winnall Down.
Wessex Archaeology and the City Archaeologist have been involved to ensure sensitive handling and preservation of any important finds before main construction begins.
